L. Ron Hubbard’s understanding of the mind came from a deep and searching look into the very nooks and crannies of existence, where accepted theories were often found to be untrue. Take, for instance, the prevailing attitude towards IQ.

Before 1950, popular thinking held that intelligence was fixed. It was all genetic. Unalterable.

Sir Francis Galton, younger cousin to Charles Darwin — of the “man from apes” school — held that intelligence was hereditary and largely monopolized by Britain’s first families, of which he happened to be a member. Successful people owed their positions to genetic superiority, and conversely, the destitute deserved their lot.

The father of the American IQ tests, H.H. Goddard, took it a step further in 1919, stating, “Once a person’s mental level is determined, there is no known method of changing it.”

Later in the 20th century these concepts were taken to their extreme, including mass sterilization and selective breeding toward the delusion of a super race.

Then, in 1950, L. Ron Hubbard wrote Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health and introduced to the world the fact that IQ is fluid and — through the application of Dianetics — could be significantly improved. The key was the discovery of the exact anatomy of the human mind as laid out in Dianetics. As you will read in Dianetics,

By 1994, Mr. Hubbard’s concepts had so become a part of culture, that when two authors attempted to revive the old dogma that IQ was hereditary (an assertion with a distinctive racist edge to it) a firestorm of protest ensued, all pointing to the overwhelming proof that IQ can be raised. Their book, The Bell Curve, went up in smoke.

Stephen Jay Gould wrote, “The Bell Curve... contains no new arguments and presents no compelling data to support its anachronistic social Darwinism...”

New Republic had this to say: “...a chilly synthesis of the work of disreputable race theorists and eccentric eugenicists.”

Michael Lind called it, “...a body of racialist pseudoscience.”

Leon Wieseltier proclaimed it, “...old, dreary and indecent, philosophically shabby and politically ugly...”
